Grounded in culture. Guided by connection. Focused on the whole person.
At Rising Tides, we care for young people in a way that sees and supports all of who they are — emotionally, physically, spiritually, and relationally. Our approach is grounded in the Te Whare Tapa Whā model, informed by trauma-aware practice, and delivered by a team who live these values every day.
We don’t see our work as just “looking after kids.” We walk alongside young people as they heal, grow, and reconnect with who they are — and who they’re becoming.
Consistency That Builds Connection
Our 7-days-on, 7-days-off roster is designed with relationships at the centre. By having the same team members consistently in the home each week, our young people are able to build trust, feel safe, and form meaningful bonds with the adults who support them. This structure gives our team the time and presence to really get to know each young person — creating stability, reducing stress, and allowing for deeper, more genuine care.
“When we care for the whole person — their wairua, their thoughts, their health, their whānau — that’s when real change happens. Te Whare Tapa Whā helps us see more than just behaviour. It reminds us that every part of a young person matters.”
— Rakai Strother, Co-Founder, Rising Tides
Our Holistic Model of Care
Our model of care is grounded in Te Whare Tapa Whā — a holistic Māori framework that guides us to support wellbeing across the wairua (spirit), hinengaro (mind), tinana (body), and whānau (relationships). When these areas are nurtured, tamariki begin to feel more settled in themselves. Their confidence grows, they feel stronger in their bodies, more in control of their emotions, more connected to their identity, and more hopeful about the people around them.

Physical Wellbeing (Taha Tinana)
“We prioritise the physical health and safety of children through consistent care, healthy routines, access to healthcare, and safe living environments that support their growth and development.”
Spiritual Wellbeing (Taha Wairua)
We honour each child’s spiritual identity by respecting their beliefs, values, and purpose. Through connection to culture, faith, or nature, we support them to find strength and belonging.
Mental and Emotional Wellbeing (Taha Hinengaro)
“We prioritise the physical health and safety of children through consistent care, healthy routines, access to healthcare, and safe living environments that support their growth and development.”
Family and Social Wellbeing (Taha Whānau)
“We recognise the essential role of whānau and relationships in a child’s life. We work alongside families and communities to strengthen bonds and ensure children feel loved, connected, and supported.”
Care That Understands Where Behaviour Comes From
At Rising Tides, we know that behaviour is often a response to trauma — a way of coping with fear, loss, or pain. That’s why trauma-informed practice is central to our model of care. We don’t just react to behaviour; we take the time to understand it.
